\n[Morgan, can you here briefly sketch three important recent books that engage this material in important ways? No two of them should concern the same class of disorders, and none of them should be by you. (Sorry.) One of them -- but no more than one of them -- could be by a conference participant.]

(April 26 took out Garland-Thomson, who made it below, and kept the rest in case we want to flag these as more recent interventions we merely gesture toward at the end of the timeliness section -- Morgan hopes that timeliness is about the growth of the field over the past decade rather than the most recent sexy book titles, but if we need the most recent sexy book titles, these could be some of them -- I wonder (TH) about one of the keynote speakers being included as a recent author of something -- could we add that?)>

\nThe conference promises to examine further the implications of shifting medical protocols and language, the promise and limitations of increasing the degree of input that patients have into their medical care in a consumer-service based model (most importantly, when we shift medical care from being a social good to being a consumer good, what types of patient\/consumers are most likely to be able to positively influence their own care? How do we assess the 'best interests' of minor patients, or of those who can no longer represent themselves? Whose voices count, and whose do not? How do race, class, age, proximity to specialist centres, level of education and so forth influence not only access to care, but the manner in which consumers\/patients experience their care? How do these issues of social location impact on the manner in which consumers\/patients cope with challenges to their identity when medical conditions and\/or crises interrupt or disrupt identity categories normally taken-for granted? (eg: when faced with a diagnosis of disability in a wanted pregnancy, when facing infertility, when a recovered body does not match a pre-trauma identity?) In what ways are gender and diagnosis linked as an experience of self (as in cases of self-harming behaviours often popularly associated almost exclusively with one gender or the other as in cases of self-harming behaviours, eating disorders etc? The conference is also interested in looking at the technical and human limitations in restoring bodily function, and in treating those whose identities have been shaken by disease, disability, and\/or trauma. Increasingly, we turn to medicine to provide quick fixes to complex problems (eg: organ failure, infertility) and yet find that its solutions often fall short of what we would have hoped for. Ought our clinical practice perhaps be looking not only at the technical interventions available, but also at more 'holistic' approaches as central features of care provision, not for bodies or diseases, but for whole subjects?
\nThe conference, to be held in July 2009, seeks to further conversation and collaborative scholarship between international and interdisciplinary scholars who bridge the humanities, social sciences and medical areas of specialisation. Furthermore, the conference promises to bring this collaboratively produced knowledge to a wider community of undergraduate and graduate students by actively soliciting their participation as workshop attendees, and conference organizers.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
